After row, MP school says scarf won’t be a must in uniform

BHOPAL: A day after Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered an inquiry into the school hijab row in Damoh, the school held a press meet on Friday to announce that the scarf/dupatta will not be a mandatory part of the uniform for girl students.

Damoh collector Mayank Agrawal had asked the school management to relax the norm of compulsory wearing of scarf/hijab for girl students and not recite prayers like “Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua” during assembly. Only the National Anthem will be sung. The school has agreed to it and stated that wearing a scarf/dupatta is voluntary.

In a press statement, the school management expressed regret if anyone felt hurt by the incident.

The probe committee set up under the CM’s instructions will continue with its investigation, said officials.

On Thursday, CM Chouhan had ordered a probe after a picture of a poster of the school, showing Hindu girl students in a “hijab-like headgear”, triggered a controversy. Chouhan said that no girl should be compelled by any school to wear an attire that “goes against their cultural traditions”.
