NEW DELHI: Marking the beginning of the southwest monsoon's withdrawal from the country, IMD said the rain-bearing system may start retreating from parts of west Rajasthan around Monday, some eight days later than the normal date of September 17.

After delay of 8 days, withdrawal of monsoon likely to begin from Monday
Withdrawal of southwest (summer) monsoon is likely to begin from parts of west Rajasthan around Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. The withdrawal from western most parts of Rajasthan, marking the beginning of monsoon retreat from the Indian subcontinent, may thus be delayed by eight days against the normal date of September 17.

"Due to anti-cyclonic flow developing over northwest India at lower tropospheric levels and dry weather prevailing over parts of southwest Rajasthan, conditions are becoming favourable for withdrawal of southwest monsoon from parts of west Rajasthan from around September 25," said the Met department.

Though the four-month monsoon season technically ends on September 30, its withdrawal is normally completed by October 15. The late retreat of the monsoon this year is the 13th consecutive delayed withdrawal. Onset of monsoon over Kerala this year happened on June 8 against the normal date of June 1.

"Reduced rainfall activity is likely to continue over northwest and adjoining west central India during the next five days," said the IMD.

As on Friday, the overall cumulative monsoon rainfall deficit in the country is 6%.
