Farewell flight marks the beginning of the end

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on Monday flew a sortie in the iconic aircraft to commemorate its legacy and decades of operational service, as the Indian Air Force (IAF) prepares to phase out the MiG-21 fighter jet on September 26. (PTI image)

The backbone of Indian Air power

Since its induction in 1964, the MiG-21 has been described as the “backbone of the IAF.” For nearly six decades, it played a pivotal role in shaping India’s air defence and combat strength. (PTI image)

A personal connection

Sharing his memories, the Air Chief said, “The MiG-21 has been the workhorse of the Indian Air Force. It was inducted in 1964 and has continued in service ever since. My first flight in a MiG-21 was in 1985. It was a simple yet remarkable aircraft to fly, though it demanded rigorous training.” (Image: X/@IAF)

Intensive battles

The MiG-21 saw extensive action in multiple operations, including the 1971 war with Pakistan, where it proved its combat effectiveness. It also trained generations of fighter pilots, who recall it as both demanding and rewarding to master. (ANI image)

Last flight legacy

In a post on X, IAF wrote, "Honouring the enduring legacy of MiG-21, the Chief of the Air Staff visited No. 23 Sqn "Panthers", the last squadron operating the legendary fighter. The CAS flew a fighter sortie, and also in a formation led by Sqn Ldr Priya, symbolising both tradition and transformation. On 26 Sep 2025, the MiG-21 retires after six decades of glorious service in the IAF."

Time for transition

With ageing technology and mounting maintenance challenges, the IAF decided to retire the fleet. Chief marshal Singh said, “Those who have flown it will miss it, but every platform has its time. Technology has moved ahead, and we must adapt.” (Image: X/@IAF)

Tejas takes over

The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas has been designed as a MiG-21 replacement. Singh explained that Tejas is “small, agile, and also inspired by the Mirage.” Along with the Tejas Mk-2, Rafale, and Su-30 fleet, it will form the backbone of the IAF’s future strength. (Image: X/@IAF)

The road ahead

Just as the MiG-21 evolved through multiple variants, Chief Marshal Singh emphasised that Tejas must also grow with new weapons and capabilities. With the MiG-21’s retirement, the IAF closes a historic chapter but carries forward its legacy as it transitions to a new generation of fighter jets. (PTI image)
