NEW DELHI: Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday protested outside Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, alleging that an event on campus promoted separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.
The protesters raised slogans and smeared black ink on the university’s nameplate. They claimed that a programme linked to the Kunan-Poshpora incident was part of a larger agenda to divide India and Kashmir.
According to posters shared by the agitators, the event referred to the alleged mass rape incident in Kunan-Poshpora on the night of February 23-24, 1991. The poster said that no conviction has taken place in 35 years and that the victims were still fighting for justice. It described the case as one among many instances of violence in Kashmir.
The university said in an official statement that around 20 people forced their way into the campus at around 6 pm. It said they shouted slogans, vandalised property, and assaulted security guards and some students. The university said it immediately informed the local Sarjapura Police Station and that police rounded up the group.
The university clarified that it had not authorised any such event and that the alleged programme planned by a small group of students did not take place.
