BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee said Chandra Shekhar's death marked the end of an era of political struggle.
NEW DELHI: Describing Chandra Shekhar as a politician of great stature, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said, "He stood out because of his ability to boldly speak on any issue unhesitantly." Chandra Shekhar, who joined Congress after an initial stint in the Praja Socialist Party, had a love-hate relationship with the party. Backed by Congress to become PM after the fall of the V P Singh government in 1990, he was bitter after the party compelled him to resign.
BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee said Chandra Shekhar's death marked the end of an era of political struggle. "He was not just a gutsy fighter but an uncompromising politician as well, he did politics on his own terms." CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said Chandra Shekhar had been "on the forefront of politics during the coalition era". CPI functionary D Raja called him a "truly secular politician rooted to socialist values".
