NEW DELHI: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, epicentred in Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan, jolted several parts of north India, including the Delhi-NCR region, forcing people out of their homes and creating panic.
However, there were no reports of loss of lives or property.
The Sunday afternoon tremors left people scampering out of their homes.
Delhi Metro services were briefly suspended following the temblor.
"Service were halted briefly after the quake but we resumed operations soon after," a Delhi Metro official said.
Outage at many places in ValleyThe earthquake jolted the valley triggering panic among the residents and leading to power outage at many places.
The tremor struck the Valley around 3.59pm as people ran out of homes for safety, officials said.
Panic-striken people rushed out of buildings for safety. J&K had suffered a major temblor in 2005 which had devastated several border areas in the Valley.
Many places in the city on Sunday witnessed power outage in the aftermath of the tremor, the officials said.
There was no immediate report of any loss of lives or damage to property, they said.
