544 convicts on death row, Government informs Parliament

NEW DELHI: Total 544 convicts on death row are lodged across the country's prisons as on December 31, 2022, home ministry informed Lok Sabha Tuesday.

Replying to a question by TMC MP Adhikari Deepak Dev, junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said NCRB data show maximum convicts handed capital punishment are lodged in jails of UP (95), followed by Gujarat (49), Jharkhand & Maharashtra (45 each), MP (39), Karnataka (32), Bihar (27) and Bengal (26). In Delhi, 8 convicts were handed death sentence, as per NCRB report on crime in India released in 2023.

Eleven states & UTs (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, & Puducherry) had no death row convicts in jails.
