NEW DELHI: Over 50 Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders, including former deputy chief minister Tara Chand, on Tuesday announced resignation from party in support of Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Chand and several others, including former ministers Abdul Majid Wani, Manohar Lal Sharma, Gharu Ram and former MLA Balwan Singh, announced their resignations from their party, including its primary membership, at a press conference.

"We have submitted a joint resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi in support of Azad," Balwan Singh said.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday resigned from all positions of the Congress party including the primary membership of the party. "The Indian National Congress has lost both the will and the ability under the tutelage of the coterie that runs the AICC to fight for what is right for India," wrote Azad in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi.

He accused Rahul Gandhi of reducing to “ruins” what was once a “national movement” that won the country independence.

Meanwhile, Congress slammed Ghulam Nabi Azad saying he has been tasked to “slander” the party and is diminishing himself further by doing so.

“After such a long career, courtesy entirely the party he’s been tasked to slander, by giving interviews indiscriminately, Mr Azad diminishes himself further. What’s he afraid of that he’s justifying his treachery every minute? He can be easily exposed but why stoop to his level?” party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh tweeted.
