THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For three-year-old Aromal, things could not have got any worse. In an age when he should be running around carefree, the boy was locked up in chains, with a pet dog, by his guardians before they left for work every morning.
Aromal’s trauma continued for over five months till he was finally saved on Friday, after the police intervened.

The incident happened in Idukki district of Kerala. Police arrested the child’s "mother" Manju, Benni — the man she was living with — and Benni’s parents in connection with the incident.
Some relatives of the family, who visited the house on Friday and saw the boy’s plight, reported the matter to the police. The boy was crying out of hunger when the police party rescued him. There were many injury marks caused by the chains besides several burn injuries on his body. Police are investigating if the child indeed belongs to the couple.
The couple, who worked as daily wage labourers, admitted that they used to lock up the child before leaving for work, police said. Though neighbours had protested the action, they had backed out after Benni began to threaten them, police added.
According to neighbours, Manju and Aromal had started living with Benny about five months back. The boy used to be chained from 8 am till 6 pm and sometimes even at night, they said. Benny had also opposed suggestions to shift the boy to an orphanage, they said.
