‘I’m not yet a brand name’
Fresh from the victory against the Aussies in the World Cup, captain of the Indian women's cricket team, Jhulan Goswami, talks from Sydney about adding sheen to India Shining.
This win was a team effort, so we all went for dinner together to celebrate.
Do you have any strategy for the next match against the Kiwis?
There���s no strategy as such. It���s just that we all need to perform well. The next match against New Zealand is a crucial one.
Who are the key players for Team India?
Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra and Gouher Sultana are our key performers.
How did you pep up your girls before the match against Australia?
The girls knew that this was a crucial match. They were aware that they had to go there and play positive cricket.
How does it feel, having beaten Australia on their home ground?
This is our first win against the Aussies on their home ground and the feeling is ecstatic. After a long time, we���ve managed to score 200 plus against them. Everybody was in high spirits.
What are the areas that still worry you?
In order to win matches, we have to perform well in every department, be it batting, bowling or fielding. We are doing a good job with the bat, but bowling and fielding are still areas of concern. We need to tighten our bowling and be more agile on the field.
How pressurising is the skipper���s job?
In international cricket, the pressure to perform is inherent and everybody in the team feels it. As for leading the team, I don���t take any pressure once I���m on the field. I try my best not to let it affect my performance.
Who is Team India���s most formidable rival in the World Cup?
Cricket is a very uncertain game and you can never underestimate any of the teams.
Mithali Raj was the team captain before you. Has that affected your personal equation with her?
Mithali and I are very good friends and share a great rapport on and off the field. We have been playing together for the past eight or nine years, and there���s no room for misunderstanding between us.
With Rahman���s Oscar win, your team���s performance at the World Cup and Dhoni���s men being on a roll, India is shining, literally...
Definitely, India is shining everywhere and we hope to add more sheen to this by winning the World Cup. Also, we need to learn from Team India���s consistent
performance in all the matches. As for Rahman, after Satyajit Ray, he���s brought the Oscar to India, and we are all proud of him.
Is Jhulan Goswami now a brand name?
I���m not yet a brand name. Jhulan Goswami is still the same person that she used to be. Mithali Raj and Anjum Chopra are the brand names.
