Last year, Sai scripted history by becoming the first Indian male player in 36 years to win a medal at the prestigious BWF World Championships. Sai won a bronze medal in the tournament.

"Awards motivate us to do better and better," the 27-year-old said after receiving the awards.

Before Sai, Prakash Padukone had won a bronze medal at the world championships in 1983.

Also in March 2019, Sai won a silver medal at the Swiss Open Super 300 event. For his impressive show in the year, he was conferred with the Arjuna Award.
