You might be a trailblazer. You might be the next Bradman, but if you are not smiling for a toothpaste or selling washing machines then you haven’t yet arrived. Virender Sehwag has.
Because along with Coke, his name will now be associated with seven more products. India’s aggressive opener has just signed up for a new innings, that as brand ambassador, but he refuses to be bowled over by the contracts.
“Success for me is not proportional to brands and contracts. Yes, they do make life comfortable, but they are a by-product. Cricket and only cricket is responsible for my success, if any. I still have a long way to go.
Those who have seen him play tend to equate his game with Sachin’s, and in his new brand-man avatar he will also be treading on Tendulkar’s turf as he’s signed up for Boost and Adidas – brands that have been endorsed by Sachin.
“Sachin Tendulkar’s my idol and I think it’s an honour to represent the brands with him. I feel good when I do these associations. Sehwag is humble and has his head firmly on his cricketing shoulders.
And speaking of the game, he’s dismissive of conjectures surrounding his choice of an opening partner. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s Sourav Ganguly or Sachin. It could be either or none. I concentrate on my game and don’t mind opening with anyone. What matters is that I give my best.
With seven products riding on his name, that is a one reassurance certain brand managers will only be too glad to believe in.
