VIJAYAWADA: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Tuesday urged the Centre to declare an ordinance for stalling National eligibility-cum-entrance test (Neet) for admission in medical stream for the current academic year at least.

Addressing a media conference here, Rao recalled that as many as 23 states were opposed to Neet.

Keeping in mind the views of the majority of the states, the centre is expected to find alternatives to overcome the Neet problem which became mandatory in the light of Supreme Court judgment.

The minister said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is currently on a visit in Delhi, would also take up the Neet issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a request for an ordinance.

Srinivasa Rao made a strong case for exemption of the states like Andhra Pradesh which already conducted Engineering, agriculture and medical common entrance tests (Eamcets) from the purview of Neet.

He contended that there was no level playing field between the students taking the Neet at the national level and those getting through the Eamcets at the state level with the background of state syllabi.

As the Neet threw the medical admission process out of gear, thousands of students are anxiously waiting for the answer key after appearing for the Eamcet.

The results were withheld by the government, heightening the tension of candidates.
