The course is now considered as a degree which gives students the opportunity to secure a job straight out of the college.
NEW DELHI: Home science is no longer an option for only homely girls. Over the years, the course has gained market value and recognition as a job-oriented professional course. From being treated as an easy option, the course is now considered as a degree which gives students the opportunity to secure a job straight out of the college. B Sc (honours) and B Sc (pass) in home science are offered by two colleges in Delhi University — Lady Irwin College (LIC) at Sikandara Road and Institute of Home Economics (IHE) at Hauz Khas Enclave.
With increasing opportunities in areas like nutrition, textile and mass communication, students coming from these courses are readily absorbed by the industry through campus placements.
"Earlier, people used to take home science as a soft course. However, of late, the perception has changed. During graduation, a lot of emphasis is given to the professional skills gained by the students. Campus placement can fetch a salary of Rs 10,000 plus. However, a post graduation is always a better option as it adds to the student's value," said Renu Malviya, media coordinator, LIC. Students can apply for the course through separate forms available at the colleges till June 15. LIC is also holding an open house everyday till the deadline.
The course is open to students from all three streams but is favoured by science students as they are required to study physics, chemistry and biology during the first year. After studying a general mix of subjects in the first year, students get to specialise in any of the following streams — food and nutrition, textile, resource management, child development and communication and extension. The colleges also ensure an internship of around two months during the second year of the course. Talking about career opportunities after a degree in the subject, Shashi Chowdhary, reader, IHE, said: "Students from every specialised stream have a range of options open to them. Those from textile can pursue fashion or apparel designing, merchandising or interior decoration. A lot of opportunities are also available in dietetics, fitness centres, teaching, NGOs and event management companies."
