Greece detains suspected trafficker after deadly migrant boat collision
Greek police have arrested a Moroccan suspected of being a people smuggler on a boat carrying migrants that capsized after colliding with a coastguard vessel, killing 15 people, authorities said Thursday.
Greek police said in a statement that the 31-year-old man had been identified by Afghans who were on the boat as being one of the traffickers.
ERT television said the suspect was in hospital but police said he would formally appear before an investigating magistrate on Thursday on charges including "facilitating illegal entry into Greek territory" and "causing a shipwreck".
A search operation for survivors and more bodies continued Thursday.
Many migrants have died making the risky crossing across the Aegean between Turkey and Greece. Rights groups have in the past accused Greek authorities of staging heavy handed operations against the boats.
