Goregaon Sports Club to name hall after India’s badminton doubles star Chirag Shetty
MUMBAI: The Goregaon Sports Club in Mumbai had decided to name its badminton hall after India's badminton doubles star Chirag Shetty, who trains at the academy under his coach, former India badminton player Uday Pawar.
Shetty and his doubles partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy represented India in the Paris Olympics last year. They have won multiple titles, including a gold medal in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Championships.
They are the only Indian doubles pair to become No. 1 in World Ranking, win the World Tour S1000, and the first Indians to win a gold medal at the Asian Games in badminton.
In an invitation letter to Shetty for the naming ceremony of the GSC badminton hall after the badminton star, which will take place on Sunday morning (Jan 26), the club's honorary general secretary CA Sanjay Maloo and Rakhi Sonigra, chairperson badminton of the club, have written: "The Goregaon Sports Club is honoured to invite you to the prestigious naming ceremony of our badminton facility, which will be named as the "Chirag Shetty Badminton Hall" in recognition of your outstanding contributions to Indian badminton, scheduled on January 26, 2025 from 9am at GSC Badminton Hall."
Complimenting Shetty’s numerous feats in the international badminton arena, GSC’s letter to Shetty states that, "Your remarkable achievements, including your Olympic representation and significant international victories have been a source of immense pride for our sporting community. This naming ceremony is our tribute to your exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. We would be privileged to have you grace this momentous occasion and officially inaugurate the hall named in your honour. Kindly confirm your attendance. Warm regards, Yours in sports."
“Chirag started playing the game of badminton in the Goregaon Sports Club and it is indeed a proud moment for him, his family and me as his coach that the GSC badminton courts are being named after him. I am sure that it will inspire many young badminton players to follow in Chirag’s footsteps,” Uday Pawar told TOI on Saturday.
Pawar was the bronze medalist in badminton at the 1982 Asian Games in the Men's team event and again won the bronze medal in badminton at the 1986 Asian Games in the Men's team event.
