Why this popular TV show host may have had a 'problem' with Apple
Jon Stewart, the renowned comedian and former host of "The Daily Show," has lifted the lid on the reasons behind his show's cancellation on Apple TV+, sparking a debate about creative freedom and corporate control in streaming services.
Stewart's show, aptly named "The Problem with Jon Stewart," tackled complex issues like healthcare and climate change with his effective blend of humour and investigative journalism. However, after two seasons and critical acclaim, the series was abruptly cancelled in October 2023.
In a recent interview with CBS, Stewart revealed the reason for the split: creative differences with Apple. He hinted at pushback from the tech giant on topics he wanted to explore. Rumours suggest tensions arose over proposed topics like artificial intelligence, China, and Israel, raising concerns about potential editorial interference from Apple.
“I wanted a place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season. I thought I was going to do it over at, they call it, Apple TV+. It’s a television enclave, very small. It’s like living in Malibu. But they decided, they felt, that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble,” he told CBS.
Following the cancellation and ensuing rumors, the House of Representatives Select Committee on Competition with the Chinese Communist Party requested Apple to provide justification for its decision. The committee sought clarification regarding potential undue influence from China on Apple and its programming. However, the outcome of Apple's response, if any, remains unclear at this time.
Meanwhile, Stewart is back at his old stomping ground. After a nearly nine-year hiatus, he's returned to the anchor desk of "The Daily Show" for a limited run, kicking off on February 12. While his return is primarily focused on the 2024 election, Stewart isn’t expected to shy away from tackling the broader issues of the day.
