Earlier this year in an interview Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke about how a traditional four year degree isn’t necessary for someone to be good at coding. Cook had said, “I don't think a four year degree is necessary to be proficient at coding. I think that's an old, traditional view.”

Cook is reportedly in Japan and tweeted about meeting two developers — one of them is 84-year-old — and once again reiterated his views on why age doesn’t matter when it comes to coding. “What a treat to reunite with Masako san and Hikari san, some of our imaginative developers who prove that no matter your age, coding opens up new opportunities to follow your dreams!”

The one app developer Cook mentions in his tweet is Masako Wakamiya who is 84 years old and created her first iPhone app three years ago. A CNN report previously stated that she started using computers when she was 60 years old. In fact, Wakamiya is a retired banker and in a TEDx talk she revealed that it took her three months to set up a computer. However, she overcame the challenges and launched her own app three years back.

Cook, meanwhile, also interacted with primary students on his trip to Japan. He again spoke about the importance of coding and why it is essential to start it early. He tweeted, “Coding is one of the most important skills you can learn. Loved celebrating Computer Science Education Week with students from Rikkyo Primary School at Apple Marunouchi!”

The Apple CEO met the students at Japan’s largest Apple Store, which was opened in September this year. The store, which is the fifth from Apple in Tokyo, has a “a unique facade, with two-story vitrine windows made from specially cast aluminium to obtain three-dimensional rounded corners”
