Championing the cause of ‘emerging talent’ seems to be the latest mantra that is being employed by the Indian fashion industry with great altruistic fervour.

While the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) guys have always seen to it that young designers got their moments of glory at the bi-annual fashion weeks, guess who’s jumping into the ‘emerging tlent’ bandwagon — albeit with a zarra hatke twist?
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) has announced its plans to host the country’s first-ever National Fashion Awards in Mumbai next year. And ironically, their ‘manifesto’ screams with big bold letters that they are “The first-ever National Fashion Awards to recognise Emerging Talent”!
According to Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, FDCI, the Fashion Awards are a step in the direction towards fostering the growth of the Indian fashion industry. “It is now time to reward deserving individuals for their contribution to Indian fashion,” said Jha. “Along with established designers, these awards will also recognise and reward upcoming designers and the allied fashion fraternity, which includes models, fashion photographers, choreographers, make-up artists, etc.”
The Fashion Awards event will be managed by 360 Degrees and Ernst & Young has been appointed as the official tabulators for the awards.
Now, what’s that sound we hear? Could it perhaps be the rumblings of a rival fashion awards event in the making?
