Majestic 2 Movie Review : Revisiting a Routine Bengaluru Underworld Drama

Critic's Rating: 2.0/5
By Susmita Sameera

Majestic (2002) remains one of the most iconic films in Darshan Thoogudeepa’s career, where he appeared as the iconic character Daasa. Years later, Majestic 2 arrives with a title that recalls the earlier film, though the story itself is not directly connected. The film only briefly references the legendary Daasa who once ruled the Majestic area. In one scene, a character even questions how the present-day protagonist could ever match that powerful personality. Another character responds with an interesting observation: in today’s generation, appearances can be deceptive, and the most innocent-looking individuals can quickly rise to become feared figures in the underworld.

The story follows MariDaasa (Bharath Kumar), a bright college rank holder with strong academic potential. His family struggles financially—his mother (Shruthi) earns a living by tying flower garlands, while his father is bedridden due to illness. After his father’s death, MariDaasa takes on the responsibility. He continues his education through correspondence while working at a tea stall to support his mother.

Amid his daily struggles, a gentle romance develops between MariDaasa and Preethi (Samhita Vinay), who works at a clothing store. For a while, life appears to be settling into a hopeful direction. However, everything changes when MariDaasa repeatedly encounters a notorious underworld boss during his tea delivery rounds. The gangster humiliates and provokes him on multiple occasions. When the man eventually misbehaves with Preethi, MariDaasa’s anger reaches a breaking point, leading him to commit his first murder. The act lands him in prison and marks the beginning of a drastic transformation in his life.

After serving his sentence, MariDaasa steps back into the world only to find that several underworld figures are waiting for revenge. The rest of the narrative revolves around whether he can survive these threats and protect the family he cares about.

Majestic 2 follows a familiar template often seen in films centred on Bengaluru’s underworld. The storyline relies heavily on well-known genre elements and does little to introduce fresh ideas. Bharath Kumar is adequate as the innocent young man who is gradually pulled into a darker world. Shruthi delivers a dependable performance as the struggling mother, adding emotional weight to the story. Veteran actress Malashri also makes a brief appearance in a special song.

Technically, the film remains fairly average, with nothing particularly striking in its execution. Overall, Majestic 2 is a routine underworld drama that revisits a familiar formula without bringing much novelty to the narrative.
