Rama and Ramu Movie Review : A Serial Killer’s Protest Against Public Apathy

Critic's Rating: 1.5/5
By Susmita Sameera

Rama and Ramu begin with the daily routine of a garbage collection van. A sanitation worker repeatedly asks residents to separate wet, dry, and medical waste, but his instructions are ignored. The protagonist is introduced as a graduate working alongside civic staff, living a life far removed from his educational background. The opening attempts to portray the struggles of sanitation workers and the public’s careless attitude toward waste disposal.

The narrative then shifts abruptly to a disturbing setting where garbage is piled up alongside rusted weapons. The protagonist (Chandru Obaiah) is revealed to be a serial killer with a list of targets. He informs both his victims and the police before executing his plans, using different identities to approach them. Despite repeated efforts, the police fail to catch him as he continues to escape.

His targets include ex-army officer Rame Gowda and financier Martin. The situation escalates when he kidnaps a young girl, Samyuktha, and confines her in his room without killing her. A special officer, Vikram Rathod (Nagendra Urs), is appointed to handle the case and is given authority to eliminate the killer if necessary. After a prolonged pursuit, the police manage to rescue the child and capture him.

In the final portion, the killer reveals his motive. He speaks about his wife Lakshmi (Soumya Amarapurkar) and their daughter, who died because of improperly discarded medical waste left near their house. He claims that society’s negligence toward garbage disposal destroyed his family and led him to seek revenge. The film ends with the police encountering him and discarding his body by the roadside among garbage, creating a symbolic conclusion.

Although the film focuses on the issue of waste segregation and the health risks caused by improper disposal, the storytelling lacks clarity and structure. The screenplay moves without a smooth flow, and the transitions between scenes feel disconnected. The performances appear unconvincing, and the technical aspects such as cinematography, editing and overall execution remain weak. The result is a film that struggles to engage and often tests the viewer’s patience.
