1/5

The danger of eating dry chia seeds

The mistake you can make is eating chia seeds dry. Chia seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid. If you swallow seeds, they will start to absorb moisture in your throat or stomach. This can cause them to swell into a jelly-like block. This can be a choking hazard and can cause internal blockages.

2/5

Pre-soaking is the way

To safely eat chia seeds, you should soak them in a liquid before eating them. Let them sit in water, milk or a plant-based milk alternative for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This makes them expand and creates an outer layer. This makes them easy to swallow. Makes the nutrients easier for your body to absorb.

3/5

Ground or whole chia seeds

Grinding them can help you get more omega-3 fatty acids. If you grind them into a powder, it breaks down the outer shell. This makes it easier for your body to absorb the fats. The Oatmeal and Smoothie You don't have to wait 20 minutes if you are adding chia seeds to smoothies or oatmeal. When you blend them into a smoothie, the blades break down the seeds. This makes it safe to drink. When you stir them into oatmeal, the seeds absorb the steam and liquid. This makes them soft and easy to digest.

4/5

Managing the fiber

Chia seeds are high in fiber. They have 10 grams of fiber in one ounce. While fiber is good for your gut, introducing much fiber too quickly can cause problems. If you are not used to eating fiber, you may experience bloating, gas and stomach cramps. The best way is to start with an amount and gradually increase it.

5/5

The Golden ratio

If you want to prepare chia seeds the way remember a simple ratio. For a chia gel or pudding use 1 part chia seeds to 4 parts liquid. Mix it well, let it sit for five minutes and stir it again. Let it rest. By letting the seeds expand before eating them, you can safely enjoy the benefits of chia seeds.
