YouTube's new monetization rules: What changes (and what doesn't)
YouTube has some big news for budding content creators and influencers. People thinking of venturing into the world of video content creation through YouTube might have to face some new challenges due to YouTube's new monetization rules.
The online video sharing platform has announced new monetization updates under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) which will be effective from July 15, 2025. What are the new rules and what are the ones that remain the same? Find out below!
When YouTube announced an upcoming monetization policy update, people were concerned about the same. However, the company clarified that the changes are aimed at better detecting inauthentic content and not a crackdown on reaction videos or clip compilations.
Renee Richie, a creator liaison at YouTube clarified the confusion in an explainer video saying, “If you’re seeing posts about a July 2025 update to the YouTube Partner Program monetization policies and you’re concerned it’ll affect your reaction or clips or other type of channel. This is a minor update to YouTube’s long-standing YPP policies to help better identify when content is mass-produced or repetitive.”
He explained that the type of content targeted by the update is the mass-produced, repetitive material that is already ineligible for monetization under the company's YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
This means that channels that post reactions or compilations will have to add their own meaningful value to the existing content. Additionally, those making tutorials and vlogs will need to not using existing clips and text-to-speech narrations. Those relying on AI-generated videos might be at risk of losing their monetization privileges as well.
The core eligibility thresholds on YouTube remain consistent. In order to be monetized, a channel must have 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million valid shorts views in the past 90 days.
Reaction, compilation and clip channels are not outright banned but creators can no longer rely on picking clips from sources and reusing them or on AI. There has to be something that you add to the videos.
This move by YouTube comes after a surge in faceless, AI-based channels that produce more volume than value. Thus, the new changes will bring back the era of creators who are authentic, trustworthy and passion-driven.
