Woman enters MRI machine with gun hidden in her back pocket, what happened next will shock you

MRI or magnetic resonance imaging scan has a primary ‘no metal’ policy. This rule is not ancient radiography or tradition but is merely a safety instruction to stop the patient from getting hurt inside the scanner. Unfortunately, many people do not consider these messages and enter the MRI scanner with a loaded gun.

A woman in the United States of America entered the MRI scanner with a loaded gun kept in her back pocket. Ignoring the ‘no magnetic objects’ rule, the woman carried a concealed iron handgun inside the scanner. The handgun instantly attracted the magnet, firing a single shot right near her buttock area.

The patient was examined by a physician at the hospital, who later on described that the entry and exit holes are too small, thus penetration of a tissue can only help in the process. The woman answered no to all the screening questions which included weapons specifically, as she was examined through a standard screening process for magnetic objects.

MRI machines usually work by creating a powerful magnetic field and radio waves that target hydrogen nuclei in water. As these protons are subjected to the magnetic field, they form a strong axes line up. This alignment then creates a strong magnetic vector which is also oriented with the axis of the scanner.

Therefore, when additional energy enters into the magnetic field, the vector is deflected, and the radio wave frequency causes the nuclei to resonate with the strength of the magnetic field. Thus, when the radio frequency source is switched off, the magnetic vector comes to a resting phase and causes a signal. These signals create the MR images.

These magnets are highly powerful, and thus patients are asked to remove all the metal from their body, as if entered they can become a dangerous projectile. After precautions and advisories, still people ignore the details.

In October, a nurse at a US hospital suffered injuries after she was trapped between an MRI and a hospital bed. In January, another Brazilian lawyer was also killed after a gun was carried by the individual in his waistband, which ripped his pants and discharged into his stomach inside the scanner.
