Why koalas hug trees: The real reason behind this adorable behaviour
Their habit of hugging branches is a deliberate, evolved strategy, not a whim or sentiment. This behaviour keeps them cool during extremely hot weather, aids in digestion, and keeps predators away.
Tree hugging helps koalas stay cool
Koalas hug trees to cool down. The trunks of the trees, and eucalyptus trees in particular, retain low temperatures as compared to the ambient temperature. Koalas, therefore, often rely on the trees to get rid of the excessive heat on hot days.
A study named “Tree-hugging koalas demonstrate a novel thermoregulatory mechanism for arboreal mammals”, published on PubMed Central, has also found that the Koalas wrap themselves around the trunk of the tree to reduce the need to pant and move, thus conserving water and energy. Such a habit is a matter of life and death because heat waves, which are on the increase due to changes in the climate, are becoming more common.
Trees provide a safe resting spot
This lifestyle also protects the koalas from other predators found on the ground, including dogs and foxes. In a state of deep relaxation, their tight hold on the tree trunk also protects them, and the tree acts as a bed and a shield.
Hugging trees supports koalas’ low-energy lifestyle
Koalas eat the leaves from eucalyptus plants. These leaves do not contain much nutriment and are difficult to digest. In response, koalas do everything possible to conserve their energy. Koalas usually hold onto the trunks of the trees as resting perches, staying inactive.
As they remain immobile and clutch the bark of the tree with their limbs, they conserve their muscles and avoid expending unnecessary energy in the process. Such an act aligns with their metabolism and their lifestyle of conserving energy.
Not all trees are equal for koalas
Koalas are no random tree huggers. They have a preference for trees with stronger trunks, smoother bark, and lower temperatures. Certain species of eucalyptus trees are valued not only as a food source but also as a way to control temperature.
Thus, koalas naturally select those trees which can provide them maximum comfort, security, and temperature regulation ability. This is again an indication of how closely they live with their surroundings.
Why this behaviour matters today
As the temperature rises and the land area shrinks, the number of trees the koalas need to stay cool and survive is dwindling. These trees provide essential shade and help regulate body temperature, especially during extreme heat. The way the koala hugs the trees is more than an adorable habit because it explains the importance of conserving the eucalyptus forests. Protecting these forests is more than ensuring the integrity of a beautiful vista; it is protecting the lifestyle of one of Australia's most famous symbols.
