Who was Kiara Janae Brokenbrough? Bride who went viral for $500 wedding dies during childbirth
In 2022, Kiara Janae Brokenbrough went viral for pulling off a $500 wedding. On March 30, 2026, she died shortly after giving birth to a baby boy who was christened Jonah. The baby was born prematurely and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit. As per a GoFundMe set up by Kiara’s mother-in-law, “Joel and his wife Kiara Brokenbrough were married 4 years ago and were expecting their first child in June.”
She spent $47 on her wedding dress, which she bought from Shein. The couple did not want to go into debt hosting a celebration and thus cut costs by finding a free outdoor location and having family and friends pay for their own food and drinks. They also received cake and flowers as gifts from family members.
"Our goal was to just be as minimal as possible," Kiara revealed on Good Morning America at the time. "And to spend the least amount of money as possible."
A GoFundMe created to support her husband and son has raised over $125,000. Comments under Kiara’s obituary remembered her as a person who could “light up a room with her energy” and was “always unapologetically herself.”
Joel took to social media to lament his wife’s death, saying he had only begun to process the unimaginable and sudden loss. "My beautiful, God-fearing, Worshipping Wife, has gone home to be in the presence of the Lord," he wrote.
The instance has also raised concerns on risks of childbirth, particularly for Black women, who are roughly 3.5 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
