Sometimes, all it takes is one viral reel to turn an ordinary workday into a national talking point. That’s exactly what happened with Moni Nain, a railway employee in Delhi who suddenly found herself at the centre of an online debate about social media, professionalism and government jobs.

So, who is Moni Nain?

Moni works as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) and Ticket Collector at New Delhi Railway Station. She joined the Railways through the sports quota and, like thousands of railway staff across the country, her job involves direct interaction with passengers every day.

But outside her railway duties, Moni also built a strong online presence. Her Instagram account crossed 3.6 lakh followers, thanks to short videos ranging from lip-sync reels to lifestyle snippets. Many of these clips showed her in uniform, often filmed inside railway premises, giving followers a peek into what appeared to be her daily routine at work.

And that’s where things changed.

Some of her reels began circulating widely online. Soon, social media users started tagging railway authorities, asking whether government employees were allowed to create entertainment content while on duty. What may have started as casual content quickly turned into a larger question about workplace boundaries.

In private sector jobs, social media activity often goes unnoticed as long as work gets done. Government service, however, comes with stricter expectations. Public offices aren’t just workplaces - they’re service spaces funded by taxpayers. That difference became the centre of the debate.

As the videos went viral, reactions online grew sharper. Some users felt the reels crossed a line, arguing that official uniforms and public spaces shouldn’t double up as influencer backdrops. The controversy picked up pace after a railway passenger group flagged the issue on X and tagged senior railway officials, asking for clarification and action.

Soon after, the Delhi Division Railway Manager responded publicly. Officials confirmed that Moni Nain had been issued a strict warning and instructed not to film or upload reels while performing official duties. She was also directed to delete videos recorded during working hours.

Following the directive, Moni removed the work-related reels from her profile. Her recent posts now focus on personal moments - travel clips, outdoor updates and lifestyle content - signalling a clear shift away from mixing her job with her influencer identity.

But the discussion hasn’t really ended. The episode has opened up a wider conversation about government employees and social media fame. Smartphones have made everyone a potential creator. Yet for public servants, the rules remain more complicated.

And Moni Nain’s viral moment has become a reminder of just how thin the line can be between going viral and facing scrutiny.
