Donald Trump has defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to become the 47th President of the United States. Four years after departing the White House, Donald Trump marked his comeback with a victory speech to an enthusiastic crowd at the Palm Beach County Convention Center early Wednesday. Surrounded by members of his family and other Republican leaders, Trump said, “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”

Trump also praised his running mate, JD Vance, who will be the next Vice President of the United States. “I want to be the first one to congratulate — now I can say Vice President-Elect JD Vance. And his remarkable and beautiful wife, Usha Vance,” Trump said.

JD Vance’s selection as Donald Trump’s running mate in July confirmed his rapid ascent within the Republican Party. Many analysts now view him as the leading figure in Trump’s "Make America Great Again" movement and a strong contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. But who is JD Vance, the new Vice President of the US and probable heir of Trump?

Vance started his career as a venture capitalist and lawyer, but became a well-known figure after the release of his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which detailed his experiences growing up as a member of the white working class. The memoir was life-changing, as Vance soon found himself being elected as the Republican to the U.S. Senate in 2022, representing the state of Ohio.

James David Vance was born as James Donald Bowman on August 2, 1984. His parents, Don and Bev Bowman, have Scots-Irish ancestry. When he was still a young child, his parents divorced, and his mother later changed his middle name to David. Eventually, he adopted his mother’s maiden name, Vance, as his surname. His mother struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, and Vance was primarily raised by his maternal grandparents, who had moved to Middletown from eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian region.

JD Vance completed high school in 2003 at Middletown and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Iraq during the Iraq War. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Ohio State University, graduating in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy. Vance then attended Yale Law School, earning his law degree in 2013. He met his wife Usha Chilukuri Vanceat Yale Law School and got married in 2014 in a ceremony that included a Hindu ritual. Together, they have three children. After law school, he built his career by working with the law firm Sidley Austin LLP and later transitioned into roles at investment firms based in California and other locations.
