Who is Daniel Kinahan? The alleged Irish drug boss arrested in Dubai
The arrest of Daniel Kinahan in Dubai has grabbed global attention, with the alleged Irish crime boss linked to one of Europe’s most powerful drug cartels and accused of controlling a major share of the cocaine trade while living openly in the United Arab Emirates.
His arrest on 15 April 2026, under an Irish court‑issued warrant, marks the latest chapter in a long‑running international manhunt that has involved Ireland, the United States, and Dubai police.
Irish courts and law‑enforcement bodies, including the Garda Síochána (Irish police), have named him as a senior figure in a network linked to international drug trafficking and firearm offences.
Dublin’s High Court has labelled him a key leader of a cartel allegedly worth hundreds of millions, or even billions, of euros. A US Department of Justice‑led operation has also accused him and his family members of helping to control up to a third of Europe’s cocaine market.
According to the Irish Independent, the Dubai authorities acted within 48 hours of receiving the Irish judicial file and issued an arrest warrant through the Dubai Public Prosecution to begin extradition procedures.
The Garda Síochána said the arrest came under the bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE, and the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that Kinahan will face trial in Ireland on alleged serious organised crime charges.

Kinahan became particularly notorious for his suspected role in directing the gangland violence in Ireland between 2015 and 2018, a feud between the Kinahan network and the Hutch‑linked faction that left at least 18 people dead. In 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on him and offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest of three Kinahan‑family leaders: Christy Kinahan and his sons Daniel and Christopher, said an AP report. His arrest and extradition push
In April 2026, Dubai Police announced that an “Irish fugitive” had been arrested for an “alleged role in an international organised crime network,” later confirmed to be Daniel Kinahan.According to the Irish Independent, the Dubai authorities acted within 48 hours of receiving the Irish judicial file and issued an arrest warrant through the Dubai Public Prosecution to begin extradition procedures.
How he fits into the Kinahan network
Kinahan is not the only top figure of the Kinahan cartel to be arrested in Dubai. His close associate Sean McGovern was detained in 2024 and later extradited to Ireland. Fox News reported that both men were among the organization's top seven leaders. Several of these leaders relocated to Dubai and faced US Treasury sanctions in 2022 for their alleged roles in drug trafficking and money laundering.end of article
