Who is Arsalan Chaudhary and what’s his role in Canada’s biggest gold theft
Toronto’s largest gold theft is back in the spotlight. Arsalan Chaudhary, 43, who police say played a major role in the multimillion-dollar heist at Pearson Airport, was arrested after arriving from Dubai. His arrest marks the latest development in the high-profile investigation that has already caught several suspects.
According to Peel Regional Police Insp. Mike Mavity, Chaudhary had arranged through his lawyers to turn himself in upon landing. “I don’t know specifically why he chose to surrender,” Mavity told CBC News.
Chaudhary now faces multiple charges, including theft over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. He was held for a bail hearing on Wednesday, according to a report by CBC News.
Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah stressed the message this arrest sends about law enforcement’s reach. “Let it be known: no matter where you try to run or hide, we will find you,” he said, as quoted by CBC News. Seven other suspects have already been arrested in connection with the case, and investigations continue.
The gold theft happened on April 17, 2023. A cargo flight from Zurich carrying 400 kilograms of gold, valued at over $20 million, and $2.5 million in foreign currency, was targeted. The stolen items were reported missing the next day.
According to CBC News, Police say two groups were involved. One group included airline employees who allegedly helped with the theft. The second group consisted of outside collaborators, including Chaudhary.
Insp. Mavity said, “Once the gold was removed from Air Canada cargo, he helped, we believe, facilitate the sale and get it ultimately out of Canada.”
The Crown’s statement of allegations, which was exclusively obtained by CBC’s The Fifth Estate, describes Chaudhary as heavily involved in planning the theft. He is said to have helped coordinate another suspect’s travel to the United States and other actions after the crime. One suspect called him the heist’s “top dog.”
According to CBC News, during raids at Chaudhary’s apartment, police seized $154,000 in cash, several cellphones and SIM cards, and two handwritten lists showing how $9 million was planned to be divided. On the day of the heist, Chaudhary reportedly exchanged calls or messages with other suspects 772 times.
After the theft, one suspect messaged him on WhatsApp, saying, “I’m so happy for you Bro,” and “I can’t even sleep, lol.” Chaudhary allegedly replied, “It’s insane.”
Police have also issued a warrant for a 27-year-old man from Brampton connected to the case. Two other suspects, including a former Air Canada employee, are still at large.
The case continues to show the scale and planning behind the operation and the determination of law enforcement to bring all involved to justice.
