Though these characters are traditionally service-oriented roles and often have a submissive nature, when some choose them as Halloween costumes, it may mean the opposite.“Does that mean that young women dressed as sexy wenches have a secret wish to be powerless and rescued? Pirates and swashbucklers are also common. Though these characters embody strength, adventure, and heroism, they also represent loneliness; most are solitary figures. However, men who dress up as these characters are experimenting with power, independence, and charisma — not necessarily wanting to be isolated heroes, according to Yarrow. For them, it’s a chance to demonstrate confidence and dominance.WerewolfAnother popular costume of the season is the werewolf. So what does this costume reveal about the individual’s personality? According to Jared DeFife, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Emory University School of Medicine, it could be a sign that the person is struggling. “Nothing says ‘I’m struggling with adolescent hormonal issues’ like a creature with bad body odour and hair growing everywhere that gets really moody according to the lunar calendar,” DeFife said.Vampires, devils, witches, grim reapers Vampires and witches rule the Halloween season. So do grim reapers and devils. What do these dark, predatory roles portray? There is no doubt that they represent control, fearlessness, and rebellion. They are unburdened by morality or vulnerability. While most wear them to be their favourite star for a day, others could be hinting at something else. “Could there be a more neurotic costume choice? Dressing up like one of these glitzy pop stars screams of internal emotional conflict. Dying for attention, but desperate for privacy. Baby, they’re just born that way,” says DeFife.
