Fascinating facts about silverback gorillas

In recent years, the need to protect wildlife has become more urgent than ever. And among the many species at risk, silverback gorillas stand out– not just because they’re powerful or rare, but because they’re surprisingly like us. These gentle giants, found in the forested mountains of central and eastern Africa, are known for their strong family bonds, emotional depth, and social intelligence.

But despite all that, they’re under serious threat. From shrinking habitats and human conflict to illegal hunting, silverback gorillas face daily challenges just to survive.

Still, they continue to live in close-knit groups, care for their young, and show a side of animal life that’s deeply emotional and connected. Here are seven key facts about silverback gorillas that show why they matter– and why they need our protection.

2/8

The ‘silverback’ tag comes with age and responsibility

The word silverback doesn’t apply to all gorillas– it refers only to adult males, usually over 12 years old, who grow a silver strip of hair across their back. These mature males usually lead the group, called a troop. They’re responsible for making decisions, keeping the group safe, and guiding their movements.

3/8

Their DNA is surprisingly close to humans

As per online sources, silverback gorillas share about 98% of their DNA with humans. But it’s not just about genes– the similarities show up in their behaviour too. From the way they care for their babies to how they build strong social bonds within their groups, gorillas often act in ways that feel surprisingly familiar.

4/8

They communicate through sounds, gestures, and expressions

Silverback gorillas use more than just sounds to communicate. Along with grunts, hoots, and roars, they also rely on body language, eye contact, and facial expressions. These help them show how they’re feeling– whether they’re calm, alert, or sending a warning. It’s a key part of how they live and stay connected as a group.

5/8

Their physical build is made for strength

Male silverbacks can weigh up to 180 kg and have incredibly strong upper bodies. But don’t let their size fool you– they’re not slow. They can move quickly and smoothly through thick forests, especially when they need to protect their group or respond to danger.

6/8

Their diet is mostly plant-based, but diverse

Silverback gorillas spend a big part of their day just looking for and eating food. Most of their diet is plant-based– things like leaves, shoots, fruits, roots, and stems. Sometimes, they also eat insects like ants or termites. In certain areas, they even chew on tree bark or rotting wood to get extra minerals.

7/8

They have a wide range of vocal sounds

According to online sources, researchers have found that gorillas use at least 16 different types of sounds, each with its own meaning. For example, short barks can show mild alarm or curiosity, while deep roars or chest-thumping are used to show strength or scare off threats. These sounds help keep the group organised and connected.

8/8

They can live for over four decades in the wild

If left undisturbed, silverback gorillas can live up to 40 years in the wild. Males go through clear life stages– starting as infants, then growing into adolescents called blackbacks, and finally becoming mature silverbacks. But because their life cycle moves slowly, it’s harder for their population to bounce back when their numbers go down.
