What does the 'JD' in JD Vance actually stand for?
There are two kinds of people the world always talks about, the ones it loves, and the ones it hates. One could even go out on a limb and say that the more popular ones out of both are personalities that the world can't digest. They are the ones being criticised in headlines, ranted about in social media posts and scrutinised by the public.
One such controversial figure is the Vice President of America, JD Vance. His enigma is such that it has America divided into two halves, one that loves him and another that hates him. But hate him or love him, they are hooked on to every piece of information he has to offer. While the media and trolls might be digging deep, what's interesting is that something basic such as his first name is information that no one holds at the top of their head. What does the JD in JD Vance stand for?
The first time America was introduced to the personality of JD Vance was in 2016 when the senator from Ohio released his bestselling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy" under the name J.D. Vance. In the book, he explained that it was not the first iteration of the name nor would it be the last.
It was on August 2, 1984 that James Donald Bowman was born in Middletown, Ohio. At the time of his birth, his middle and last name mirrored those of his father, Donald Bowman.
After their divorce, his mother Beverly got married for the third time, when he was six. He was adopted by his stepfather, Robert Hamel and renamed James David Hamel, with the addition of David after his uncle.
For more than two decades, Vance went on as J.D. Hamel, a name he graduated high school with, served as a U.S. Marine with and earned a political science degree with and entered Yale with.
Thus, he decided to change his name to Vance, the last name of his beloved grandmother who raised him, his Mamaw.
According to Van Kirk, he completed the deed in 2013, when he was about to graduate from Yale, as stated in a Fortune report. “Throughout his tumultuous childhood, Mamaw — or Bonnie Blanton Vance — raised JD and was always his north star,” Van Kirk said in a statement. “It only felt right to him to take Vance as his last name.”
One last change to the now global name was the removal of the periods in J.D. Vance in 2021, after he joined politics. Vance was asked by The Associated Press if it was a formal change or stylistic preference and he stated that it was how he preferred to be referred to in print. Now, he is referred to as JD Vance in the media, business filings, press releases and more.
His legal name today is James David Vance, the Vice President of the United States of America.

The birth of J.D. Vance
As he mentioned in his book, after his mother and stepfather got divorced, his name was something that gnawed at him. “I shared a name with no one I really cared about (which bothered me already), and with Bob gone, explaining why my name was J.D. Hamel would require a few additional awkward moments,” he wrote. Thus, he decided to change his name to Vance, the last name of his beloved grandmother who raised him, his Mamaw.
