‘We didn’t realise the danger’: Dhruv Rathee shares chilling Dubai escape story
Sometimes a holiday flips without warning. One moment you’re planning breakfast by the beach, the next you’re watching events unfold that don’t feel like part of a vacation at all. That’s what YouTuber Dhruv Rathee says happened during his recent trip to Dubai.
He had travelled with family and was staying at a hotel on Palm Jumeirah, right across from the Fairmont The Palm. The neighbourhood is usually quiet in the mornings - tourists heading for coffee, soft sea breeze, nothing dramatic. Just another relaxed day in one of Dubai’s most polished tourist spots.
But the calm didn’t last.
Rathee described hearing a sudden explosion that cut through the silence. Soon after, flames were visible rising from the Fairmont property across the road. Guests stepped out, confused, trying to figure out whether it was an accident or something more serious. A place known for luxury holidays suddenly felt tense and uncertain.
Around the same time, reports began surfacing about military operations involving the United States and Israel targeting Iran. And suddenly the incident didn’t feel isolated anymore. The wider situation across the region started to weigh on people who had simply arrived for a break from everyday life.
Despite the confusion, Rathee and his immediate family managed to leave Dubai on an early morning flight. At the airport, everything appeared normal. Check-in counters were open, passengers queued as usual, and flights were departing on schedule. Nobody seemed to realise how quickly things were escalating.
Then came the moment that changed the mood completely.
A few hours into the flight, cabin crew informed passengers that a major military conflict had broken out. The airspace they had just crossed was now being treated as a restricted combat zone. Hearing that after takeoff felt unsettling - safe inside the aircraft, yet suddenly aware of how close they had been to a dangerous situation.
After landing, the scale of events became clearer. Videos began circulating online showing smoke near Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world. Reports spoke of evacuations and damage to parts of the airport, along with injuries among staff members responding to the situation.
Rathee later recalled noticing heightened defence activity even before departure. Drone interceptions were reportedly seen near the Burj Khalifa, while falling debris allegedly caused fires near the Burj Al Arab. Images of emergency response teams around landmarks usually associated with glamour and tourism felt surreal.
And that’s when the experience turned personal.
While his own flight had taken off in time, several members of his extended family were scheduled to leave just hours later. Their flights were cancelled after UAE authorities suspended air traffic operations. Airports quickly filled with stranded travellers waiting for updates that didn’t come easily.
Rathee shared his concern for relatives still stuck at the airport, unsure when flights would resume. Major airlines, including Emirates and Etihad Airways, halted services as tensions across the region intensified.
What started as a simple family holiday became something else entirely. A reminder that global events don’t always stay confined to headlines or distant places. Sometimes they arrive unexpectedly, right outside your hotel window, turning an ordinary morning into a story you never planned to live through.
