What happens when creativity meets sustainability? A group of children at the Kolkata International Drum Festival 2025 just showed us. Imagine a group of kids, not with traditional instruments, but with items you’d usually throw away– old bottles, containers, and bits of discarded materials. That’s right, they turned household waste into musical instruments and performed remarkable Bengali nursery rhymes, capturing the hearts of all who watched.

In a truly unique performance, these children, guided by the talented musician Sanjay Mandal, took what most would consider everyday garbage and converted it into a work of art. From bottles turned into shakers to pots used as drums, the children created their instruments out of items that would otherwise be discarded. As they played, their voices blended beautifully with the sounds of their creative, DIY instruments, breathing life into traditional Bengali songs.

This display was more than just about creating music– it was about repurposing, rethinking, and finding beauty in the most unlikely places. The kids didn’t need fancy gear or expensive instruments. Their creativity was the only tool they needed!
Sanjay Mandal: The respected mentor behind the magic
This incredible performance was led by Sanjay Mandal, a highly respected figure in the music community. He has had a huge impact on these young musicians, and his guidance was clear in their performance. With over a decade in music, Sanjay’s team was a finalist on India’s Got Talent in 2009/2010 and has performed on popular shows like Zee Bangla Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
