UPI in 2026 isn’t just scan and pay: 4 surprising new features you should know
UPI has quietly become part of everyday life. You step out for a quick coffee, split a bill with friends, or pay a delivery person, and almost without thinking, you reach for your phone and scan. It’s quick, familiar, and for most people, that’s where it ends.
But over time, UPI has added a few features that go beyond just scanning and paying. The interesting part is that many users haven’t really explored them yet. Not because they’re complicated, but simply because the usual way already works.
If you’ve been using UPI the same way for a while, here’s a look at a few features that can make things a little smoother.
This one is built for everyday, small spends.
Think of it like keeping a small wallet inside your phone. You add money to UPI Lite from your bank account and then use it for quick payments.
The main advantage is simple. You don’t have to enter your PIN for every transaction.
So whether it’s a cup of tea, a quick snack, or an auto ride, the payment happens faster. It works for transactions up to Rs 500, and you can keep a total balance of up to Rs 2,000.
Most of us are used to scanning QR codes, but this feature removes even that step.
With Tap & Pay, you just bring your phone close to the merchant’s device, and the payment goes through. No scanning needed.
It works on phones that support NFC and on apps that have this feature enabled.
For higher amounts, you still need to enter your PIN, so the security part remains unchanged. It just makes the process quicker for everyday use.
There are times when you need to make a payment, but your account balance is not enough at that moment.
UPI now allows you to use pre-approved credit from your bank in such situations.
So instead of switching to another payment method, you can complete the transaction within the same UPI app. This feature is mainly available for merchant payments and depends on your bank’s approval.
UPI is slowly expanding beyond India.
In some countries, including Singapore, the UAE, and France, UPI payments are now accepted at select locations. This has been made possible through partnerships with local payment systems.
For travellers, this means one less thing to worry about. You may not always need to rely on cash or cards in these places.
None of these features change how UPI works at its core.
You still open the same app and make the same payments. But these small additions are meant to make everyday transactions quicker and more flexible.
And once you start using them, it’s hard to go back to the old way.
