Ugly spat between cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Sreesanth: Read details
Cricket is called a game of gentlemen, but there have been instances when it all went haywire and led to ugly fights between players. The much-discussed altercation between former Indian cricket team players, Gautam Gambhir and Sreesanth, unfolded during a match involving members of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams.
The heated exchange took place within Legends League Cricket (LLC) during a match in Surat. The confrontation began when Sreesanth gave Gambhir a prolonged stare, prompting Gambhir to reciprocate at the game's conclusion. The tension escalated to a face-to-face confrontation during a critical moment in the match.
After the game, Sreesanth took to Instagram, announcing his intention to reveal what Gambhir had said during the incident. In a subsequent social media post, Sreesanth disclosed that Gambhir had referred to him as a "fixer."
"I have not used a single bad word or any abusive language. I only said, 'What are you saying?' In fact, I kept laughing sarcastically, and he said, 'You're a *** off fixer,'" stated Sreesanth in an Instagram post. He claimed this was the language used, adding, "When they were trying to control him, he kept on calling me a fixer."
Sreesanth, previously embroiled in a 2013 match-fixing case resulting in a ban until his return in 2021, asserted in the video that Gambhir had made inappropriate comments related to the fixing allegations.
Accompanying the video, Sreesanth's caption accused Gambhir of instigating unwarranted conflicts and lacking respect for senior players, including Virender Sehwag. Sreesanth clarified that his family has endured significant hardships since 2013.
"I am not at fault here. I just wanted to clear the air right away. What Mr. Gauti has done, sooner or later, all of you will get to know," mentioned Sreesanth in the post. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the unacceptable language and comments made by Gambhir on the cricket field.
Sreesanth concluded the post cryptically, hinting at Gambhir's remarks in due course.
Many might wonder how Sreesanth, accused of spot-fixing, is still allowed to play cricket. In 2015, the Patiala House Court dismissed all charges against Sreesanth, along with Chandila and Chavan, in the 2013 IPL spot fixing case. No prima facie case under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) was established against them. However, the ban was only lifted by the Supreme Court in 2019, which deemed a reevaluation of Sreesanth's punishment necessary. The court also instructed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the penalty imposed on Sreesanth.
