Top 10 largest glaciers in the world

Glaciers are some of the most amazing parts of nature. These thick, slow-moving sheets of ice may seem quiet, but they’re incredibly powerful. Over time, they’ve shaped mountains, carved valleys, and changed the land around them. Glaciers also store a huge amount of the world’s freshwater– almost 70%. Most of them are found in freezing places like Antarctica, the Arctic, or high up in the mountains.

But even though they’re far away, they affect all of us. As the Earth gets warmer, many glaciers are melting faster than before. That’s why it’s so important to learn about them. In this list, we’re looking at the 10 biggest glaciers in the world by area– where they’re located, how large they are, and why they matter.

2/11

Seller Glacier – Antarctica Mainland

Seller Glacier is the largest glacier in the world by area, covering around 7,018 square kilometres. It’s located on the Antarctic mainland and holds a huge amount of ice. This glacier moves slowly, but its size makes it very powerful. It plays an important role in storing Earth’s freshwater.

3/11

Thurston Island Glacier No. 1 – Antarctic Islands

This glacier is found on Thurston Island, just off the coast of Antarctica. It covers about 5,261 square kilometres. Like many Antarctic glaciers, it’s surrounded by ice and snow all year round. It’s one of the biggest glaciers on the surrounding islands.

4/11

Alexander Island Glacier No. 1 – Antarctic Islands

Located on Alexander Island– the largest island in Antarctica– this glacier covers roughly 4,766 square kilometres. The area is covered in thick ice sheets and is very remote. It's one of two massive glaciers found on this island.

5/11

Alexander Island Glacier No. 2 – Antarctic Islands

This is the second large glacier on Alexander Island, covering about 3,980 square kilometres. Together with Glacier No. 1, it forms a vast icy region. These glaciers are rarely visited by humans due to the extreme cold and isolation.

6/11

Mercator Ice Piedmont – Antarctica Mainland

The Mercator Ice Piedmont is a type of glacier that spreads out at the base of mountains. It covers around 3,499 square kilometres. Found on the Antarctic mainland, it moves slowly from the hills down to flatter land. Like many glaciers, it plays a key role in shaping the landscape.

7/11

Malaspina–Seward Glacier – Alaska, USA

Located in Alaska, this glacier is the largest in the United States, covering 3,363 square kilometres. It’s made up of two connected glaciers– Malaspina and Seward. It’s one of the most unique-looking glaciers in the world.

8/11

Wykeham Glacier South – Arctic Canada

Wykeham Glacier South is found in the Canadian Arctic and covers about 3,176 square kilometres. It’s located in a very cold and remote region. The glacier plays an important role in feeding rivers and lakes in the area. It’s one of the largest glaciers outside Antarctica.

9/11

Bering Glacier – Alaska, USA

Bering Glacier is the longest glacier in North America and covers about 3,025 square kilometres. It lies in Alaska and is known for melting rapidly in recent years. This glacier helps control water flow into nearby rivers and lakes. Scientists closely study it to track climate changes.

10/11

Hubbard Glacier – Alaska, USA

Hubbard Glacier, also in Alaska, stretches across 2,834 square kilometres. Unlike many glaciers, it is still growing. It regularly breaks off large pieces of ice into the sea, which can be seen by visitors. It’s a popular stop for cruise ships and nature lovers.

11/11

South Dome Glacier (Barnes Ice Cap) – Arctic Canada

This glacier is part of the Barnes Ice Cap in northern Canada and covers about 2,771 square kilometres. It’s one of the few remaining parts of ancient ice sheets that once covered large parts of North America. The glacier is slowly shrinking due to rising global temperatures.
