The body of 38-year-old Joyce Carol Vincent, originally of Caribbean descent, was found in a decomposed state at her dilapidated North London residence on a chilly day in January 2006. In a scene straight out of a horror flick, there was a ton of mail piled up alongside her body, along with some unopened Christmas presents. The refrigerator had stocks of food expiring in 2003, indicating that she had been gone a long time. In an irony of sorts, the TV was still running, and a leading news channel was on, yet no one ever discovered anything was amiss, for three whole years. The shocking discovery was made, when officials from a north London housing association broke into her house in Wood Green to collect piling rent arrears.

What went so horribly wrong?
Unfortunately, since Joyce had been dead for three years, not much could be deciphered on her cause for death, though it was said that she was not keeping well and had asthma and peptic ulcer, which could have caused her demise. Her identity was confirmed through her dental records.
Early life
Despite her tragic death, Joyce's life, though difficult, was not so dismal to start off with. Born on October 19, 1965, in London’s Hammersmith area, Joyce lost her mother at the age of 11, after which she was brought up at Fulham Palace Road. She had a difficult relationship with her father, and grew up under the care of her sisters. Joyce was fond of music, and had even shook hands with Nelson Mandela at a concert in 1990.

Later on, Joyce had a decent career going, including holding the position of a treasury at a leading MNC. However things began to go south in 2001, when she resigned from that position, with no reason given.

Tragic downfall
Post that, Joyce slowly disconnected with friends and family, and increasingly started living in a shell. Her last documented job was that of a cleaner, a stark contrast to her earlier life. The last few years of Joyce seem to be marred by isolation, and loneliness, and there were even reports of a violent relationship, and domestic abuse, as she moved into a flat meant for abuse victims.

The story of Joyce had sent shockwaves all around the world, leading to the 2011 docudrama “Dreams of a Life,” which documented her early life, and interviews with those who knew her on a personal level.

Not only that, her story was the inspiration behind musician Steven Wilson's album “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” that explores themes of isolation and anonymity in urban life.
