Cleanliness in Indian Railways has long been a topic of heated debate, with people often voicing their concerns over hygiene standards. While one might assume that higher-tier compartments like 1st AC and 2nd AC will be maintained better, a viral video has shed light on a different reality.
In the viral clip, a woman is seen meticulously cleaning her 2nd AC berth, and while it doesn’t make sense why she is cleaning an already clean apartment her wipes tell another story. As she runs the wipe, they come out visibly dirty. Shared on Instagram by Priya Sharma, a content creator, the clip has amassed over 12 million views and counting. The video captures Priya enthusiastically scrubbing the table and seat of her 2nd AC berth with liquid detergent and a cleaning sponge, determined to ensure a spotless space.
The video was captioned, “Even though the 2nd AC coach wasn’t that dirty, I decided to give a small section a quick clean to make it spotless! I refreshed the area effortlessly." She further added, "Cleanliness is not just about messy spaces; even clean ones deserve a little care! Let’s all do our part to keep our surroundings neat and tidy".
However, the video has divided the netizens. While some appreciated the woman’s effort to maintain cleanliness, others didn’t understand the need to clean the place when it is not necessary. One user commented, “I think it's a wonderful thing to do. I mean if we passengers make sure to clean our place before leaving the train,it will actually help in a big way. However, a second user said, “I respect what you're doing, but I don't want this to be normalised, One Need to do either clean themself or Have to pay Tax on everything. I should pay tonne load of tax and I also need to clean the train myself...?”
