The northern lights will be visible soon: Here’s how to catch the breathtaking display this week
The Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the northern lights, is set to make a striking appearance this month, giving the skywatchers a window to appreciate the wonders of the aurora.
According to Space.com, NASA solar physicist David Hathaway’s 75-year study confirms that March has more geomagnetically active days than any other month. The likelihood of spotting the aurora is significantly increased as there are total of six high-activity days, which is twice as many as December,
This aurora's intensity is further amplified by the approach of solar maximum, the peak of the Sun’s 11-year cycle, leading to stronger and more frequent auroras.
When to watch the Northern Lights in March 2025As reported by Forbes, the best viewing window this month falls a few weeks before and after March 20, specially just after sunset. Further, as per NOAA, the lights are best visible between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time.
March is considered the top month for aurora viewing in 2025, not only due to increased solar activity but also because the spring equinox positions the Earth’s axis in a way that it strengthens the interactions with solar winds, leading to enhanced auroral activity. As the Sun continues to gain strength, the frequency of aurora displays is expected to rise consequently, making this an exceptional time to witness the northern lights.
Where to see the Northern LightsAs per the prediction of NOAA, the best locations for aurora viewing include the northern United States, Canada, and areas close to the Arctic Circle. However, visibility depends on clear skies, as excessive cloud cover can obstruct the display.
How to watch the Northern LightsDue to the intensity of the event no particular equipment is required. It is advised, however, to find a dark location away from artificial lights. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the optimal viewing time is one to two hours before and after midnight. Reducing exposure to bright lights beforehand can further improve visibility.
The northern lights have surpassed scientist's predictions and have put on an extraordinary show between 2024 and 2025. According to NASA, in 2024, aurora activity hit a 500-year high. The stunning displays are expected to continue well into 2025 as the Sun remains in its solar maximum—the most active phase of its 11-year cycle.
Over the past year, some of the strongest solar flares in decades have been recorded, including an X9.0-level flare in October, which was so intense that it made the northern lights visible as far south as Florida.
