Incidents of poor hygiene in medical colleges and educational institutions have recently become a frequent issue that leads to widespread outrage and concern. Such incidents not only compromise the health and safety of individuals but also decline the credibility and standards of the institutions involved.
In recent years, several cases of unsanitary practices have surfaced, which bring to light the urgent need for stricter regulations and accountability. From videos of rats in kitchen messes to the misuse of toilet water in food preparation areas, these events have ignited public anger.
The recent incident at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, is yet another example of this disturbing trend, where a video showing water from a toilet tap being used in a food preparation area has gone viral, prompting severe backlash and calls for an investigation.
The toilet tap was used to bring water into the area for cooking food during the National Medical Conference held on February 6 by doctors and other medical experts of repute.

As per NDTV, a viral video circulating on social media shows water being drawn from a toilet jet spray, with the hose extended into the working area where food is being cooked. The video then shows several containers of food left in an apparent unhygienic atmosphere.
The video quickly went viral and got a massive backlash against the management. “This is such a horrible scene,” a user wrote. “Many medical colleges are being ignored by the government,” another user commented. “Medical college and hygiene! What a combination,” a third user said.

In response to the backlash, the medical college administration had issued a statement. The college’s dean, Navneet Saxena, clarified that the water was only used for cleaning dirty utensils and not for cooking. He stated that the video had been misinterpreted. "The water was only used for cleaning dirty utensils and not for cooking," Saxena said.
The health department has initiated an investigation into the incident. “The conference took place in the New Academic Block, and food is occasionally prepared in the open areas behind it. Although the video appears to show water from a toilet tap being used, the information we have indicates it was intended solely for cleaning utensils. However, given the concerns raised, I have formally requested the dean to conduct an official investigation,” NDTV quoted Dr. Sanjay Mishra, the chief medical officer.
Last year, a video sparked outrage on social media when a video surfaced showing rats inside utensils in the kitchen mess within the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee. As per reports, rats were found in cooking utensils in a mess in the Radha-Krishna Bhawan at the institute. Some students of the institute reported that, on October 17th, they went into the kitchen during the lunch hour and saw rats abound there.
