Shocking! Nurses mock patients in viral TikTok, pay heavy price
A disturbing incident involving healthcare workers at a Santa Barbara urgent care clinic has come to light after a social media post sparked outrage. Employees of Pesetas Urgent Care, affiliated with Sansum Clinic under Sutter Health, shared photos on TikTok that mocked patients’ medical discharge following pap smear tests, as reported by PEOPLE. The video was removed soon after it went viral over the Labour Day weekend.
Mocking patients’ medical samples on social media
According to the report, the controversial TikTok, posted by a user named @angieuncut, showed several clinic employees gathered around an exam chair stained with discharge from a patient. Screenshots obtained by the Santa Barbara Independent revealed six photos in total. In one, a nurse dressed in pink scrubs gave a thumbs-up, while another staff member in blue scrubs bent down and stuck out her tongue near the stained chair. The video was captioned, “Guess the substance.”
While the original poster had left the organisation in July, other individuals visible in the post were still employed at the clinic when the incident surfaced.
Immediate termination following the incident
Sutter Health confirmed swift disciplinary measures against those involved. In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson said:
“Sutter Health has terminated the employees responsible for the inappropriate and insensitive photos posted on social media.”
The organisation condemned the behaviour as a serious breach of its policies.
"This unacceptable behavior is an outright violation of our policies, shows a lack of respect for our patients, and will not be tolerated," the spokesperson said, as quoted by PEOPLE. “Protecting the trust of those we serve is our highest priority, and when that trust is violated, we take swift action to address it."
According to the report, the employees were placed on leave within 24 hours of the post being noticed, followed by termination within the next 24 hours.
Ongoing internal review and policy enforcement
Sutter Health emphasised its dedication to patient respect and professional conduct across its facilities. “We expect all team members to live our patients-first mission and uphold the highest standards of compassion, professionalism, and respect,” the spokesperson added, as quoted by PEOPLE.
“We are using this inappropriate incident to reinforce our comprehensive policies with all our team members across the organization as part of our commitment to providing all patients with high-quality, compassionate care.”
