Sania Mirza takes ‘Khula’ from ex-husband Shoaib Malik; What does Khula mean?

In a recent turn of events, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik stunned his fans with his new ‘nikah’ pictures with his third bride Sana Javed. The cricketer was earlier married to former Indian tennis player Sania Mirza. Amid the separation rumours from Sania and Shoaib's new wedding pictures flooding the internet, Sania Mirza’s father has announced that the tennis sensation took a ‘Khula’ from Shoaib Malik.

Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza were once considered a power couple in the world of sports and tied the knot in April 2010 in Hyderabad. The couple, who used to reside in Dubai also have a five-year-old son named Izaan.


What is a Khula?
After Shoaib's wedding pictures came out on Saturday afternoon, Sania Mirza’s father Imran, openly confirmed the separation stating that it occurred through the process of ‘Khula.’ It is a right granted to Muslim women to unilaterally divorce their husbands under the Sharia law. Khula means the separation of the wife in return for a payment, with the husband taking the payment and letting the wife go. The process goes ahead with the husband taking the payment or agreeing upon it and then saying ‘faraqtuki’ to the wife which means ‘I separate from you’ or ‘khala ki’ means ‘I let you go’ in other words.


Sania Mirza almost confirmed the divorce rumours with her cryptic post on Instagram recently, which read, “Marriage is hard. Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard. Choose your hard. Being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard. Communication is hard. Not communicating is hard. Choose your hard. Life will never be easy. It will always be hard. But we can choose our hard. Pick wisely. When something disturbs the peace of your heart, let it go.” Sania shared the post on January 8.”



Shoaib Malik’s is now wedded to Pakistani actress Sana Javed, who was earlier married to actor and singer Umair Jaswal. Sana Javed is a Pakistani actress who appears in Urdu television. She made her debut in 2012 with Shehr-e-Zaat and later on appeared in several serials. After making a public announcement of the wedding on Saturday via a collaboration post with Shoiab Malik on Instagram, she updated her profile name to Sana Shoaib Malik.
