Here’s a career dilemma that’s way too relatable. A professional with around 8 years of experience recently took to Reddit with a situation that left a lot of people thinking - what would you choose: a better title or a better location?


The person shared that they had interviewed with an MNC for a Senior Manager role. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, except for one thing - the job location. The role was primarily based in Hyderabad, but the same team also operated out of Bengaluru.


Right at the start, the candidate had made it clear to HR that moving to Hyderabad wasn’t ideal due to personal reasons. They specifically requested a Bengaluru posting and were told it wouldn’t be an issue.


Fast forward to the final round - they cleared it. But then came the twist.


The company came back with two options:


Senior Manager role in Hyderabad (the one they originally interviewed for)
Manager role in Bengaluru (a level lower, but same team)


Here’s where it gets interesting - the salary was exactly the same for both roles.


Naturally, this raised a few eyebrows.


When the candidate asked about the difference between the two positions, HR reportedly said that since it’s an individual contributor (IC) role, there’s practically no difference in responsibilities - just the title.

Stay in Bengaluru with a slightly lower title but a settled personal life? Or move to Hyderabad for the bigger designation but deal with relocation and everything that comes with it?

One user didn’t hold back, saying life in Hyderabad might actually be a better deal overall, even suggesting packing up and moving. They pointed out Bengaluru’s ongoing issues and felt the shift could be worth it.


Another person took a more practical route. They suggested that if the title difference might raise questions in future interviews, the candidate could simply explain the situation—or even get it documented from the company that the roles were identical in terms of work and pay.


Then there were those who questioned the whole setup. One commenter wondered whether someone with 8 years of experience typically gets a Senior Manager title, and also pointed out that if the pay is the same, choosing comfort and lifestyle might make more sense than chasing a designation.
