Same pay, different roles: This Bengaluru vs Hyderabad job dilemma has the internet divided
Right at the start, the candidate had made it clear to HR that moving to Hyderabad wasn’t ideal due to personal reasons. They specifically requested a Bengaluru posting and were told it wouldn’t be an issue.
Manager role in Bengaluru (a level lower, but same team)
Here’s where it gets interesting - the salary was exactly the same for both roles.
Naturally, this raised a few eyebrows.
When the candidate asked about the difference between the two positions, HR reportedly said that since it’s an individual contributor (IC) role, there’s practically no difference in responsibilities - just the title.
And just like that, the dilemma was real.
Stay in Bengaluru with a slightly lower title but a settled personal life? Or move to Hyderabad for the bigger designation but deal with relocation and everything that comes with it?
The Reddit post quickly caught attention, and people had strong opinions.
One user didn’t hold back, saying life in Hyderabad might actually be a better deal overall, even suggesting packing up and moving. They pointed out Bengaluru’s ongoing issues and felt the shift could be worth it.
Another person took a more practical route. They suggested that if the title difference might raise questions in future interviews, the candidate could simply explain the situation—or even get it documented from the company that the roles were identical in terms of work and pay.
Then there were those who questioned the whole setup. One commenter wondered whether someone with 8 years of experience typically gets a Senior Manager title, and also pointed out that if the pay is the same, choosing comfort and lifestyle might make more sense than chasing a designation.
And honestly, that’s what this whole debate boils down to.
In today’s work culture, titles do matter - but so do things like where you live, your daily routine, your support system, and overall quality of life.
A fancy designation might look great on paper, but if it disrupts your personal life, is it really worth it?
At the same time, a stronger title can sometimes open doors later, especially when switching jobs.
So there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here.
For some, the title upgrade would be a no-brainer. For others, staying in a city where life already feels sorted might matter more.
And that’s exactly why this post struck a chord - it’s not just about one job offer, it’s about the kind of choices so many professionals are quietly dealing with right now.
