Raygun ranked world's No. 1 breakdancer despite scoring zero at Olympics. Know why

Austrian breakdancer Rachael Gunn aka Raygun has been adjudged as World's No. 1 breakdancer despite scoring zero points in Olympics and being mocked for her bizarre performance at Olympics that also included her Kangaroo moves that went viral across the internet. Gunn who became an internet sensation after scoring zero in all her matches, was also criticized for being 'excruciatingly bad on purpose'.

Despite being a 'zero' at the first-ever breakdancing event at Olympics, Raygun has clinched the spot of No. 1 breakdancer in the world, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) has confirmed. Those who could not believe the news, the sport's governing body has issued a statement to explain their reasons behind their choice.

How Raygun got No. 1 world ranking in breakdancing

The statement said the ranking was based on the top four performances of an athlete within past one year, but doesn't include Olympic events including the Paris Games and Olympic qualifier series events in Shanghai and Budapest.

The organisation said no ranking events were held between December 2023 and the Olympics that could allow athletes to focus on qualification. This resulted in many athletes being ranked based on a single event.

Now coming back to Raygun, she finished first at the Oceania continental championships in October 2023 which helped her to score 1,000 points. The sporting organization said that Japan's Riko Tsuhako follows Raygun in the world rankings despite scoring the same points by winning the Breaking for Gold World Series in Hong Kong in December 2023, as the Raygun's result took precedence under the rules.

Raygun is a highly-qualified breakdancer

Raygun despite the Olympics fiasco is a highly-qualified breakdancer. She is quite passionate about breaking, and even holds a doctorate in media, music, communications and cultural studies, with the focus of her research being primarily on the “cultural politics of breaking.”

Raygun's husband Samuel Free, also a breakdancer introduced her to the sport and also acts as her coach.
