Rare lightning strike on Burj Khalifa captured by Dubai Crown Prince 'Fazza'

Dubai saw an unusual moment this week when the city’s changing weather created a scene that quickly caught public attention. Amid heavy rain, lightning struck the Burj Khalifa, and the brief incident became widely discussed after a video of it was shared online by Dubai’s Crown Prince.

The clip travelled fast across social media, with viewers stopping to watch a rare interaction between natural forces and one of the world’s most recognised buildings.

A rare moment shared online

The video was posted on Instagram by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum or Fazza as he is fondly called. He chose a simple caption, writing “Dubai” along with weather emojis. The focus remained on the visual itself, showing lightning hitting the Burj Khalifa during intense rainfall.

Soon after the post went live, it was shared across platforms, with many users reacting to the clarity of the moment captured on camera.

Weather conditions across the UAE

The lightning strike took place during a period of unstable weather in the United Arab Emirates. Local media reports confirmed that several areas experienced rain, thunder, lightning and hail.

According to a report by India Today, the National Centre of Meteorology stated that the country had entered the peak phase of the ‘Al Bashayer’ low-pressure system around December 18. This system led to heavy rainfall and storm warnings in multiple regions.

Sheikh Hamdan’s public role and interests

Sheikh Hamdan is known for regularly sharing photos and videos, especially those linked to nature and everyday scenes from Dubai. Beyond social media, he serves as the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.

He was appointed Crown Prince of Dubai in 2008 after serving as Deputy Ruler.

Burj Khalifa remains a focal point

Standing at 829.8 metres, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest freestanding structure in the world and also has the highest occupied floor. Its height and presence often place it at the centre of major moments in the city.

The lightning strike added another rare visual to the tower’s history, as the video showed the bolt clearly connecting with the structure during the storm.

As the clip continues to circulate online, it underlines how brief and natural events can draw widespread attention when they unfold over one of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks.
