Rajasthan in the middle of May is usually synonymous with one thing: a blistering, stay-indoors kind of heat. With daily temperatures routinely rocketing past the 43-degree mark, it’s not exactly what you'd call the prime season for a scenic heritage tour. But this year, India's most famous luxury train is throwing the rulebook out the window.

For the first time in its entire 45-year history, the legendary Palace on Wheels is braving the summer sun for a highly anticipated May run.

Breaking the September-to-April Rule

Ever since it first hit the tracks back on January 26, 1982, this heritage train has strictly followed a seasonal schedule. Operations typically run from September through April, safely avoiding the harsh reality of the North Indian summer.
So, why the sudden change of heart now?

It really just boils down to an unprecedented surge in demand for high-end rail tourism. According to North Western Railway officials, the craving for luxury heritage travel has hit an absolute peak. In fact, reports indicate that a major nationalised bank actually booked out the entire train for this specific, exclusive summer journey.

Quiet Luxury on the Tracks

If you’ve ever found yourself deep-diving into the aesthetics of old money and generational wealth, the Palace on Wheels is essentially the locomotive equivalent of that vibe.

Jointly operated by Indian Railways and the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC), the entire experience is painstakingly designed to replicate the way princely rulers once traveled across their domains.

Let's talk about the interiors for a second. The train boasts 14 incredibly detailed saloon coaches. Guests get a fully air-conditioned cabin that feels far less like a train carriage and much more like a premium suite, complete with attached bathrooms, Wi-Fi, modern lockers, and incredibly plush interiors.

Operating under the Indian Railways' Bharat Gaurav Train Policy, this special six-day journey kicked off on May 20 and wrapped up on May 25.

The starting point? Delhi's Safdarjung railway station. From there, the train embarked on a massive 2,610-kilometer loop right through the heart of the desert state. Passengers wake up to a breathtaking new backdrop almost every single day.

The ambitious itinerary hits all the cultural heavyweights: Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Marwar Junction, and Phulera, before making its final stretch back to Delhi.

It’s a rare and exciting moment for railway enthusiasts and luxury travelers alike. Heritage tourism is clearly having a massive moment right now, proving that travelers are more than willing to brave the summer sun if it means experiencing an unfiltered slice of royal history.
