Pune eatery’s sign blaming ‘orange-haired man’ for LPG price hike goes viral
The Iran-US conflict has wreaked havoc globally, affecting economies and disrupting LPG transport due to the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint.
Amid this, a small restaurant in Pune has turned a simple price‑change of LPG into a viral talking point, using a combination of humour, politics, and the real‑world impact of global fuel prices.
This creative signboard became viral on social media in minutes, form Barve Dahiwada, a popular eatery in the Kothrud area of Pune. The notice, pinned up to justify a price hike, bluntly blames international tensions for pushing up the cost of essentials like LPG and plastic.
The signboard reads, “Due to a recent war started by a dumb orange‑haired man, prices of crude oil have increased, resulting in higher prices of LPG and plastic. Hence, new rates will be effective from March 21. Kindly cooperate or help stop the war.” It is speculated that the “orange‑haired man” is widely interpreted as a reference to US President Donald Trump, though the notice does not name him explicitly.
The message quickly caught the internet’s eye, with users sharing screenshots and memes on platforms such as X, Facebook, and Instagram.
Beyond the joke, however, the notice points to a serious issue faced by small food businesses. Fluctuating crude‑oil prices have pushed up the cost of LPG and plastic packaging, squeezing thin profit margins at street‑side eateries and dhabas. As global fuel prices rise, restaurants that depend on cooking gas for daily operations often have no choice but to revise their menu prices to stay viable.
Geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in West Asia and disruptions to key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, have added to the pressure on fuel markets.
Others found the global reference both unexpected and amusing, appreciating how the notice turned a routine financial update into a mini‑commentary on world politics.
A few comments also noted that the message, while humorous, subtly highlights how ordinary Indians are indirectly bearing the cost of distant wars and policy decisions.
