Pete Hegseth shared military plans in a second Signal chat: How to reduce the risks of your private chat being leaked?
Oh Lord, yet another Signal chat leak? US Defense Secretary Pet Secretary Pete Hegseth is hot soup again for sharing details of a military strike. Nearly a month after 'accidentally' adding a journalist to a Signal group chat where Hegseth and top officials shared highly classified information about US military strikes on Yemen, the Defence Secretary decided to test the troubled waters again. The New York Times reported that Hegseth shared the plans of a March attack on Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis in a group chat that included his wife Jennifer Rauchet (former Fox News producer), his brother Phil Hegseth (who was hired at the Pentagon as a Department of Homeland Security liaison and senior adviser), and personal lawyer.
Hegseth has allegedly shared the same details of the attack that were disclosed in the previous leaked chat named ‘Houthi PC small group,’ where in the Atlantic editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was accidentally added. The previous 'leak' is now under investigation by the Defense Department’s acting inspector general.
The second group chat named 'Defense | Team Huddle,' reportedly had people from Hegseth's personal and professional inner circle, according to four people with knowledge of the chat.

While highly classified information is not supposed to be shared outside the government channel, this has also raised concerns over the privacy of the Signal chat. An American open-source, encrypted messaging service for instant messaging, voice calls, and video calls, Signal offers the best privacy protection compared to its competitors. The problem, in Hegseth's case, is not Signal's security but rather his misuse of the platform, sharing classified information with unauthorized individuals, and outside secure government channels.
In case you are wondering if your private chats are really private, here are some tips for using Signal and other chat apps to minimize the risk.
Your safety depends on your contacts: You’re only as secure as the people you communicate with, as they could share or expose your conversations. Signal has end-to-end encryption on all messages, voice, and video calls, which means no one can access your messages or calls, including hackers, law enforcement, or Signal. The app is also known for collecting almost no personal information about its users. Though the technology is secure, group chat members might take screenshots or share your messages with others, including law enforcement.
Choose contacts wisely: Be cautious about who you include in Signal chats and what you say, especially in large group chats.
Audio/video calls are safer than texting: Calls on Signal leave no written record, making them preferable for sensitive discussions. However, remember, they can still be recorded.
Use personal devices: For unmonitored communication, use your own phone or laptop, not work or government devices. Ideally, use a device never connected to your workplace’s internet, as organizations may monitor online activity.
Enable disappearing messages: Signal’s disappearing messages feature deletes texts from all participants’ devices after a set time (seconds, days, or weeks). This can reduce digital traces.
Apps’ cloud backups are less secure: Though Signal has no cloud backup, apps like WhatsApp and iMessage allow cloud backups, which may be vulnerable to hacks. You can disable these settings if you don’t want the conversation to exist.
